Nairobi (SPR): On 04/27/2012, an event themed “Peace is life, longevity to the youth” took place in Nairobi. The main purpose of the well-attended event was to discourage Somali youth from getting drawn into extremist driven activities. The event was intended to create awareness against the radicalization of youth and the growing tendency of extremism in the name of religion.
The event hosted all the different sections of the community specifically the youth living in Nairobi and its surrounding areas. Among the keynote speakers was the chairman of Waayaha Cusub Shine Akhyaar, who talked about the main objectives of the event and why it was relevant to host these types of events. Moreover, Shine mentioned that this event was paving the way for a greater event that will take place in Nairobi on May 15, 2012. Waayaha Cusub presented musical equipments and instruments recently provided to the group, and they expressed thier gratitude to the funders of the equipments/instruments. The equipments included but not limited: Speakers, Powered Amps, Instruments such 6 peice drums, Guitars, Bass and Electric Generators which was utalized for the night.
Waayaha Cusub also presented a new creative way of entertainment in which the singers were performing live music. All the guests were delighted to take part in this significant event and have told SPR news that they are always inspired by the purposely driven events of Wayaaha Cusub. Ahmed Cilmi Jama was among the guests who attended the event and he informed us that the event was very beneficial to the youth and the emphasis that it made on the imperative of coexistence and tolerance. He therefore encouraged Waayaha Cusub and its likes to continue in their efforts of creating awareness and encountering against extremism.
On the other hand, Waayaha Cusub welcomed Minnesotan Salah Doonyaale, one of Somalia’s most talented and influential song writers/composers living abroad and the founder of Somali Public Radio, Mr. Doonyaale expressed his utmost gratitude for the warm welcome he has received from Waaya Cusub on his peace building visit to Nairobi. Salah Doonaale alongside SPR journalists have also expressed their willingness to work with Waayaha Cusub with their efforts against the extremist methodologies. In tune with the message of the event Poet Salah Doonyaale recited an excited and highly enjoyed poem against youth radicalization and extremist methodologies that have detrimental and destabilizing consequences for peace and security in the region.
The most climatic and electrical performances highlighted the stars of the night, singer and the most famous rapper Digriyow, the celebrated diva of Somali music scene Falis and the much sought after singers Lixle, Burhaan and Ragu. In, the event was a success story and memorable night in which the singers and poets innovatively conveyed a vital social message in a stylistically appealing fashion.
